Best starter animals in Planet Zoo 2
Cheap to feed, small to house, forgiving while you learn the welfare system.
A first zoo fails on cash flow, not on building. These are the species that will not bankrupt you while you learn the welfare system.
How the list was built
Three things make an animal forgiving: low running cost, small footprint and a temperament that does not punish mistakes. We ranked every species with a complete spec sheet on food cost plus land area, then kept only those not listed as Endangered or Critically Endangered.

| Species | Status | Land | Food / period | Group |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Greater Flamingo | Least Concern | 100 m² | $36 | 20–500 |
| Mountain Hare | Least Concern | 200 m² | $121 | 1–5 |
| Nile Monitor | Least Concern | 220 m² | $125 | 1–3 |
| Eurasian Bittern | Least Concern | 40 m² | $191 | 1–2 |
| Common Warthog | Least Concern | 290 m² | $117 | 1–7 |
| Wild Boar | Least Concern | 310 m² | $111 | 3–30 |
| Meerkat | Least Concern | 180 m² | $176 | 2–30 |
| Toco Toucan | Least Concern | 50 m² | $238 | 1–2 |
| Nyala | Least Concern | 340 m² | $175 | 1–5 |
| Red Deer | Least Concern | 360 m² | $173 | 3–9 |
| Black Wildebeest | Least Concern | 410 m² | $169 | 4–20 |
| Blue Wildebeest | Least Concern | 410 m² | $169 | 4–20 |
Why these work
The cheapest animals to keep are usually small herbivores and ground birds. They need modest shelters and keep the food bill in the low hundreds, which is exactly what matters in Career and Franchise — cash flow is the real difficulty curve, not the building.
Watch the group limits more than headcount. A species that allows 1–2 animals total will fight if you buy three, and buying a pair of everything is the most common beginner mistake.
A simple first-zoo plan
- Pick two cheap species — one walkthrough-friendly if possible, since guests pay for close encounters.
- Build the larger habitat first. You can expand a big enclosure; you cannot fix a cramped one cheaply.
- Keep the food bill under roughly a fifth of income before adding facilities.
- Add a third species only once the first two hold stable welfare.
What to avoid early
Large carnivores and big herbivores have food bills in the high hundreds and land requirements in the thousands of square metres. They look great on a thumbnail and bankrupt a new Franchise zoo.
