Best laptop for Planet Zoo 2: the specs that matter
Frontier's minimum is an RTX 2060 with 6 GB of VRAM. Here is how to buy without overpaying.
You need a 6 GB graphics card and 16 GB of RAM just to hit the minimum. The usual "any modern laptop will do" advice does not apply to this game.
The official specs are unusually demanding
Planet Zoo 2 lists an RTX 2060 as the floor — a gaming laptop, not an ultrabook. Both tiers ask for 16 GB of RAM, and the recommended tier makes an SSD mandatory.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) | Windows 11 (64-bit) |
| CPU | Intel i7-8700K / AMD Ryzen 5 3600 | Intel i7-10700K / AMD Ryzen 7 5800X |
| RAM | 16 GB | 16 GB |
| GPU | RTX 2060 (6GB) / RX 5600XT (6GB) / Arc A750 (8GB) | RTX 3070 (8GB) / RX 6700XT (12GB) / Arc A770 (16GB) |
| DirectX | 12 | 12 |
| Storage | 40 GB (SSD recommended) | 40 GB (SSD required) |
What actually decides whether it runs
1. VRAM is the trap
Six gigabytes is the minimum, eight is recommended. Plenty of laptops sold as "gaming" ship a 4 GB GPU (the RTX 3050 4 GB is the classic example). It will launch the game, but habitat-heavy zoos will fall apart. Check the VRAM number, not the model name.
2. Laptop GPUs are not desktop GPUs
An "RTX 3070 laptop" is slower than a desktop RTX 3070, sometimes by 20–30%. Treat the official list as a class guide: you want a current x60/x70-class laptop GPU with 8 GB, not a three-year-old x80 with 6 GB.

3. 16 GB of RAM is not optional
Both tiers list 16 GB, so 8 GB laptops are out. Prefer a model where RAM is upgradeable — sims grow their memory footprint as saves get bigger.
4. Storage
The game needs 40 GB and the recommended spec makes an SSD mandatory. 1 TB is the sensible target once you add saves and Workshop blueprints.
Which tier to buy
| If you… | Look for | Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Want the cheapest thing that runs it | RTX 2060-class laptop GPU (6 GB), 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD | Minimum spec — 1080p, modest zoos, settings down |
| Want it to feel smooth | RTX 3070-class or newer (8 GB+), 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD | Recommended spec — comfortable at 1080p/1440p |
| Build huge multi-habitat zoos | Current x70/x80-class (12 GB+), 32 GB RAM, 1 TB NVMe | Headroom for large saves and heavy Workshop use |
Check what you already own
Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Performance → GPU, and read "Dedicated GPU memory". If it says 4 GB you are below the minimum regardless of what the sticker claimed. Check Memory on the same screen for total RAM.
